Thyroid surgery

Treating thyroid diseases through surgery

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped organ located at the base of the neck in front of the trachea, and consists of two lobes connected by an isthmus.

The thyroid gland constantly produces hormones that are essential for life and have several effects on the metabolism, growth and development of the body by capturing dietary iodine. Its role is crucial because it ensures the balance between the upper and lower body, between the head (our inner thoughts) and the body (our external actions). The thyroid gland also has the power to make our body work at full speed or more slowly according to our emotions.

Thyroid gland dysfunctions, which affect 15% of French people, have many repercussions on health, especially on the heart, weight, digestive system, body temperature, skin and mood.

For a great number of thyroid diseases, medicinal treatment is sufficient (hyperthyroidism / hypothyroidism), but for other ones such as the significant increase in the volume of the thyroid gland (homogeneous goitre), cancerous or non-cancerous thyroid nodules (nodular goitre), and hyperthyroidism that cannot be treated with medication, surgery is the best solution.

Dr. Stéphane Hervé is an ENT and head and neck surgeon, who graduated from some of the best universities in France. In the field of thyroid surgery, he combines the precision of the surgical technique, which results in a discreet and natural-looking scar, and the technological innovation of the NIM-response 3.0 intraoperative nerve monitoring system by Medtronic, which decreases the risk of nerve damage and ensures the patient’s good health at the end of the operation. This device has led to a new surgical strategy in total thyroidectomy: the second lobe is operated on only if the nerve of the side first operated on is still functional.
